Glock was originally founded in 1963 but it wasn't a handgun company. They originally started out as a curtain rod company. In the 1970's, Glock expanded its production line to include gun belts, gun magazines, knives, and entrenching tools for the Austrian Army.

It wasn't until the early 1980's that Glock manufactured their first pistol. At the request of the Austrian Army, Glock designed them a semi-automatic 9mm handgun, the Glock 17. Glock choose that name for the handgun because it was the 17th patent for Glock. The Glock 17 is one of the leading hand guns sold today. After a few years of success with the Glock 17, Glock introduced the Glock 18 and Glock 19. Both pistols are a semi-automatic 9 mm similar to the Glock 17. The Glock 19 is a subcompact handgun while the Glock 18 is selective fire handgun that is not available to the public.

In 1990, Glock introduced their first .40 caliber handguns, Glock 22 and Glock 23. The Glock 22 is most common .40 caliber handgun carried by law enforcement, while the Glock 23 is subcompact version of it. Glock later introduced the Glock 27 which is the subcompact version. The Glock 27 is a perfect back up weapon for law enforcement.  Many officers choose to carry a Glock 27 as backup weapon to their Glock 22 because the magizines are interchangable. 

Glock handguns have been a popular handgun for several reasons. They are reasonably priced, very reliable, lighter than most other handguns, and very simple to maintain. They are lighter due to the gun mainly being manufactured out of a polymer material which also increases the lifespan of the handgun.

As mentioned earlier, the Glock handguns are very easy to maintain. The Glock handguns contain less than half the number of parts than the other pistols available today. With less parts, it is easier to operate and easier to maintain. Field stripping of the weapon is also very easy to do. 

Although the most common versions of the Glock pistols are the Glock 17 (9 mm) and the Glock 22 (.40 caliber), Glock offers handguns in 10 mm, .45 caliber, .380 caliber, and .357 caliber. Some agencies are now switching to the Glock 31 .357 model to the high precision rate of accuracy at long range.

Glock hanguns are offered in four different styles; Standard, Compact, Subcompact, and Competition. The standard handguns (Glock 17 and Glock 22) are the choice of many law enforcement agencies due to the size. The compact handguns are perfect for people with smaller hands or a concealed weapon. The subcompact models (Glock 19 and Glock 27) are perfect for officers or detectives that require a small, yet powerful, back up weapon. The competition models are designed specifically for special units and sport shooters.

In addition to making a high quality handgun, Glock manufactures three tactical lights designed specifically for their handguns. The lights provide police officers with another tool to make their job safer. The GTL 10/11 is the basic light for the handguns. It has a Xenon white light that allows for the officer to illuminate their target. The GTL 21/22 also offers a Xenon light in addition to a visible red laser to assist in accuracy. The GTL 51/52 is the most recent light to be manufactured. It comes equipped with the Xenon light, visible red laser, infrared light, and infrared laser.

Glock offers two tactical knives. The Field Knife 78 is a classic army knife used for multiple purposes. The Survival Knife 81 is the same design as the Field Knife 78 but has a sturdy saw on one side of the blade.
